A Public drinking fountains were once prominent features of railway stations, parks and civic squares. Many were installed during nineteenth-century campaigns that linked clean water with public health and social reform. Their decline came gradually. Bottled drinks became cheap, indoor plumbing spread, and municipalities grew wary of maintenance and contamination. By the end of the twentieth century, a fountain was often treated as an obsolete fixture rather than essential infrastructure. Climate pressure and concern about plastic waste have now revived interest, but the new generation of fountains is being asked to solve problems more complex than thirst alone.

B The simplest argument for fountains is environmental. Refillable bottles can displace thousands of single-use containers, reducing production and transport as well as litter. Yet the calculation depends on use. A stainless-steel station that is manufactured, installed and cleaned but rarely visited may save little. Location therefore matters more than a citywide total. Researchers map pedestrian movement, heat exposure and the distance between existing supplies, then compare those patterns with places where discarded bottles accumulate. The aim is a network that people encounter at the moment water is needed.

C Trust is as important as physical availability. Surveys repeatedly find that some pedestrians avoid fountains because they doubt water quality or dislike touching a shared button. What Archaeological Experiments Can Prove

A Experimental archaeology attempts to understand past technologies by making, using or breaking objects under controlled conditions. A researcher may shape a stone axe, fire a clay pot or build a section of wall with tools available in the period being studied. Popular accounts sometimes describe the method as “bringing the past to life”. Practitioners are more cautious. An experiment creates a modern event constrained by selected evidence; it does not reproduce the intentions, skills or social setting of people who lived centuries ago.

B The method became influential when archaeologists grew dissatisfied with classifications based only on appearance. Two tools may look alike yet have been produced by different sequences of blows. By learning to knap stone, researchers identified flakes and scars that reveal manufacturing decisions. Their first attempts, however, are poor models for expert prehistoric work. Skill changes the amount of waste, the time required and the probability of failure. Serious projects record the experimenter’s experience and often repeat trials as competence develops.

C Replicas pose another problem. Stone and timber can vary within the same species, while modern metal may contain fewer impurities than ancient material. Researchers must decide which properties matter to the question. If an experiment tests the cutting life of a bronze blade, alloy composition is crucial; if it investigates how a handle changes grip, an approximate blade may be sufficient. No replica is identical to an archaeological object, so transparency about substitution is more valuable than a vague claim of authenticity.

A Economic accounts often assume that people choose the option they value most after comparing benefits and costs. Everyday behaviour suggests that the arrangement of options helps create those preferences. Food placed at eye level is selected more often; a form with a pre-ticked box receives more agreement; a journey shown first by an app becomes the route many travellers take. None of these arrangements removes choice. They alter the small amounts of effort, attention and uncertainty attached to each possibility.

B Researchers use the term friction for features that make an action harder, from an extra click to a requirement to locate a document. Friction is not inherently bad. A pause before transferring a large sum can prevent error, and identity checks protect private information. The relevant question is whether the effort serves the user’s goal or merely benefits the organisation by discouraging action. Cancelling a subscription through five screens while joining takes one is a deliberately asymmetric design.

C Defaults are powerful because accepting them requires no additional step and can feel like an implied recommendation.
