A For much of the twentieth century, city engineers treated small streams as obstacles. Waterways were straightened, confined in concrete channels or buried inside pipes so that roads and buildings could be constructed above them. The practice reduced local flooding in some places, but it also separated residents from water and removed habitats used by insects, fish and birds. In recent years, several cities have begun reversing this process through a practice commonly known as daylighting.

B Daylighting does not simply mean opening a pipe and allowing water to run freely. Engineers must first study how rainfall moves through the entire catchment. A buried stream may now receive far more water than it did before urban development because roofs and paved surfaces prevent rain from soaking into the ground. If a new channel is too narrow, nearby properties may flood. Designers therefore create broad banks, shallow wetlands and temporary storage areas that can hold water after storms.

C Supporters often emphasise ecological gains. Sunlight allows aquatic plants to grow, while varied depths and slower sections of water create shelter for different species. Yet recovery is rarely immediate. Soil around former industrial land may be polluted, and fish cannot return if barriers remain farther downstream. Successful projects connect several pieces of habitat rather than improving one isolated section.

D The social effects can be equally important. A restored stream may become the centre of a walking route or small park, giving residents a cooler place during hot weather. In one neighbourhood, shop owners initially feared that construction would reduce parking and discourage customers. After the stream opened, however, longer visits by pedestrians increased trade for cafés and small stores. This result is encouraging, but it cannot be assumed in every location.

A A seed library is usually a cupboard or set of drawers from which people can take packets of seed without buying them. Many operate inside public libraries, community centres or gardens. Users are encouraged, though not always required, to save seed from the plants they grow and return some after harvest. The name suggests a simple borrowing system, but living material behaves differently from books: seeds reproduce, cross with nearby plants and gradually change.

Why Night Trains Are Returning

A For several decades, overnight passenger trains appeared to be disappearing from Europe. Cheap flights covered long distances quickly, while high-speed daytime rail connected major cities. Sleeping cars were expensive to maintain and railway companies preferred vehicles that could make several journeys each day. Recently, however, night services have returned to a number of routes, attracting both enthusiastic travellers and cautious transport planners.
